How this goes together
Screen spacing is a trade-off, and it is worth stating
Planted tight, a screen closes fast and then crowds, and the inward-facing sides thin out from shade. Planted at true mature spacing it takes years to close. We usually land slightly inside mature spacing so it fills in a reasonable time without strangling itself, and we say plainly how long it will take rather than overplanting to look finished on day one.
Prep the bed, not the hole
Digging a nice hole in clay and backfilling with good soil creates a bathtub: water runs into the amended pocket, cannot move out through the clay wall, and roots circle inside it rather than venturing out. Tilling and amending the whole bed area gives roots somewhere to go and drains as one system.
Evergreen screens need water in year one
Upright evergreens are shallow-rooted relative to their sail area and they hold their foliage through winter, which means they keep transpiring when everything else is dormant. The first dry winter kills more new screens in North Texas than any summer does. They get watered through winter in the first year.
Island beds want an anchor
A bed of grasses alone reads as flat. One vertical anchor, a small tree or a sculptural specimen, gives the bed structure in winter when the grasses are cut back. We cut ornamental grasses to a few inches in late winter, right before new growth, not in autumn when the seed heads are the best thing in the yard.
