What does crape myrtle pruning cost?

What is crape myrtle murder?
Topping. Cutting every trunk back to the same height, year after year, leaving knuckled stubs.
It is the single most common landscape mistake in DFW and it is genuinely damaging. Topping forces a burst of thin, whippy shoots from each cut. Those shoots are weakly attached, they bend under the weight of the blooms, and the flower clusters arrive later and smaller than they should. The knuckle itself is a permanent scar that never goes away.
The tree does not die. That is why the practice persists. It just stops being the thing you planted it for.
How should a crape myrtle actually be pruned?
You are shaping structure, not reducing height. If the tree is too tall for the spot, it was the wrong tree for the spot, and pruning will not fix that.
- Remove suckers from the base.
- Take out crossing and rubbing branches inside the canopy.
- Remove anything growing back toward the center.
- Take off branches smaller than a pencil in diameter.
- Leave the main trunks alone.
That is the whole job. Done right it takes off surprisingly little material and the tree looks essentially the same, just cleaner.
When should crape myrtles be pruned in North Texas?
Late winter, roughly February, while the tree is dormant and the structure is visible. Before the buds break.
Do not prune in fall. New growth pushed late in the season has no time to harden off and takes damage in the first hard freeze. Light sucker removal is fine any time.
Can a topped crape myrtle be recovered?
Usually, yes, over two to four seasons.
The approach is to pick the strongest two or three shoots coming off each knuckle and remove the rest, then keep selecting for structure each winter as those leaders thicken. The knuckle stays visible for years and eventually gets absorbed as the new leaders put on diameter. It requires patience and it requires not topping it again in the meantime.
