How this goes together
Why a soldier course is structural, not decorative
The border ring does define the patio visually, and it also gives the field pavers something to lock against. Cut pieces at a raw edge are the first thing to shift. A full-unit soldier course set against proper restraint takes that load and keeps the pattern tight.
Herringbone where there is traffic
Herringbone interlocks in two directions, so units transfer load to their neighbors instead of moving independently. Running bond looks calmer and is fine for a patio nobody drives on. Anywhere vehicles or heavy furniture live, herringbone is the pattern that survives.
Base depth in North Texas clay
Six inches minimum of compacted aggregate, more where the soil is poor or the patio takes load. This region's clay has a high shrink-swell range, which means the ground genuinely moves several inches through a wet-then-dry year. The base spreads that movement out. A shallow base transmits it straight into the surface, which is why so many DFW patios are visibly wavy by year three.
Polymeric sand, done properly
Swept into the joints, then wetted in stages so it activates through the full depth rather than crusting at the top. Done right it locks the units, resists weeds, and keeps ants from excavating the joints. Done fast it forms a shell over loose sand and fails in a season.
